Summary: Twelve-year-old Kester Jaynes is locked away in Spectrum Hall, a special school for troubled children. He cannot speak. His only companions are the varmints that have remained following the red-eye plague; cockroaches and moths, whom he can hear and understand. Carried away from the school to the wild by the few surviving animals who want Kester to find the cure for the disease, he slowly discovers some of the lies that surround the red-eye disease and disappearance of the animals, as well as his own disappearance from his father, a famous veterinarian.
